Enterprise mobile data access service revenues are set to reach $43 billion by 2014, according to ABI Research. In comparison, revenues from mobile messaging services, including SMS and mobile email, are forecast to reach $48 billion in the same period. However, in most markets — except for North America and Asia-Pacific region — mobile data access revenues will top mobile messaging revenues by as much as 55%.
That prompted ABI’s practice director Dan Shey to conclude that data access is getting increasingly important to business customers and operators alike.
He added: “While operators are concerned about becoming simply access pipes, they are the only access provider for mobile data services. The challenge now for operators is enhancing the value of their pipes. Could operators create access service plans priced for higher levels of speed and services quality?”
In North America, mobile e-mail adoption and growth tips the balance of revenues toward mobile messaging. As for the Asia-Pacific region, lower data access adoption and offer spending will limit the growth of mobile data services for the time being.
