In an interesting turn of events, the iPad will now be available in Israel.
You may recall 10 days ago (or so), Israeli officials had noted the iPad would not gain approval from local regulators. The problem? WiFi broadcast power levels. Turns out the models currently sold in the US operate at higher levels than what is standard in Europe and Israel. A bummer for folks in Israel for sure… But thankfully, things have made a turn in a positive direction.
On Saturday, Israel’s communications minister decreed the iPad to be ‘all good’ for use in Israel. A spokesperson for the Israeli Communications Ministry noted:
‘Following the completion of intensive technical scrutiny, Israel Minister of Communications Moshe Kahlon approved the import of the iPad to Israel’.
Awesome news for folks in the area for sure. But there may be more to the story than meets the eye. Nechemia Peres, son of Israel’s President Shimon Peres owns the company (iDigital) with exclusive Apple reseller rights in Israel. Are you kidding me? Sounds a little fishy to me… That said… heck, I don’t care, I’m just glad the folks in Israel will be able to get their hands on the iPad.
International orders are set to be taken in early May… and I can’t wait. Being Canadian and all I’ve been a little ‘peeved’ to say the least at the delays. I mean, c’mon my American friends and colleagues, you want the thing too darn much! 🙂
I shouldn’t talk though, as I write this I’m sitting in my US hotel room, and will make my way to a Minneapolis Apple store in the very near future… Fingers crossed that they have a few iPads available! I got off the Apple support line not so long ago, and they informed me they are NOT taking reservations on the iPad any longer. Boo-urns.
