Nokia’s Ovi Mail brings email services to Bangladesh

The iPhone may still be the “prom queen” of the rich world, but in developing countries Nokia is still leading the way. And it’s not just devices the Finnish giant is pushing there — they also have services to offer.

You’ve probably read about Nokia Life Tools, but there are other Nokia services as well, such as Ovi Mail, which in some place provides people with their first email account.

Bangladesh is such a place. The country has a population of 160 million people, with only 54 million of them having a mobile phone and less than 1% having an Internet access.

In an effort to get mobile subscribers online, Nokia is heavily promoting its Ovi Mail offering in the country. Together with operators, the Finnish company is in the midst of activities designed to raise awareness and educate consumers throughout the country. Nokia is doing this at retail stores, from vans, on several campuses and so on… with some impressive results.

In just 20 days of presence on campuses, around 11.000 consumers got a new Ovi Mail account!

And that’s just a start, which is followed by activities designed to build up an Ovi community, work with content partners, involve NGOs and universities.

Way to go Nokia – that’s the way to do it! Hopefully, other smart companies will join the wave and take its share in bringing mobile communications to the developing countries. We at IntoMobile we’ll always be there to promote such a noble cause. 🙂
