Well lookey here, it seem that the land where counterfeit products outnumber the aggregate of legitimate electronics, software, clothes, accessories, etc. (etc. etc.) has just started making their own Apple iPad, only it’s called the “iPed” and it doesn’t come from Apple. In the same Chinese city that Apple’s iPhone and iPad manufacturing plant calls home, the Chinese “iPed” has just started getting some serious traction. Reports have Chinese news stations covering the launch of this obvious iPad rip-off, which uses the Android mobile operating system in place of the Apple’s iPhone OS.

According to reports, the iPed is on sale in Shenzen, China. Chinese iPed is an Apple iPad rip off that runs Android OSThat’s the same place that all our iPhones and iPads are manufactured – in the Foxconn manufacturing facility that has been getting so much bad press recently. It’s not clear how the proximity of the Foxconn plant helped make the iPed almost aesthetically identical to what Apple launched earlier this year. The Chinese Android-powered tablet even ships in a box that looks like something that Apple sells in its retail stores around the US.

So, what’s different about the iPed? Well, it runs Android OS and it’s called the iPed. Oh, and it’s slightly uglier than the iPad. On the one hand, you gotta hand it to these Chinese rip-off artists for their ambition and “creativity.” On the other hand, WTF?

See, honestly, I'd rather have that than the iPad – Android shows much more promise as a tablet computing platform than a beefed up iPhone OS does, IMO.

    • Will Park

Totally agreed, Ricky. Notion Ink Adam, anyone?

      • Will Park

Oh, and I should mention that I won’t be giving my iPad up anytime soon ;)

  • Mike

    where can I get one?

  • Chris P

The entire country China rips off the pad or a company in China rips off the ipad….?

  • d4m4s74

This isn’t the first time the chinese make a ripoff which actually is better then the original, and it probably won’t be the last time. But dude, why make a ripoff ipad? I mean, if you changed the design and name I would buy it.

  • Jannik Grensteen

Where can i buy it ???

Hey look, they are copycats just like Google!

    • Herpan Derpan

      How are Google copycats?

One of the frustrating things about Apple's control over the buying public is their refusal to allow 3rd party authors from developing a flash program for iPod. I am going to be watching the iPed closely. If the iped really wants to be compete flash is something they are coing to have to address.

Personally I'd like to rub their snobbish noses in it.

Dont hate on innovation…they are just taking something that is overpriced and making it affordable…They are learning business really quick over there!

  • FIKE2308

you cant talk about a product without saying where you can get it. chinagrabber and pricedinchina are 2 places that i know of that sells them.

  • Cynthia

You've got to admit their counterfeit skills.. lol

  • mohammed

    Just bought one from caltechmall.com
    It works well.

  • Mauro

Why do yuo call it a rip off. It is just a tablet that runs android instead of Apple OS. The rip off is from Apple that sells a product worth less than 200 dollars for 500. That is the rip off. Wake up america. Wake up

The author of this article should have mentioned that the screen shots are of a JAPANESE broadcast exposing the IPed. "Reports have Chinese news stations covering the launch of this obvious iPad rip-off, which uses the Android mobile operating system in place of the Apple’s iPhone OS" seems to suggest that these are the reports. The Japanese stations are just picking up on them. It will be interesting to see how Apple deals with this. Too bad there is so little room here in America for us to enjoy Android+Apple and other combinations. I agree that Apple should get some kind of licensing fee, but they have everything locked up with ATT and their exclusionary store.

  • Justmedlb

WHEN is any American Company, Politician, PRESIDENT if he can bring our JOBS back to US and not suffer this Chinese BS?

  • Anonymous

I have one but it suddenly died on me. I assume its because they use cheap parts and I was wondering if anyone else had this problem. I’m about to take it apart and see what I can do

    • Jinn

Nah, its useless, all Chinese made parts anyways, not worth replacing…throw it in the bin & get urself an authentic one, worth every penny :)

  • DeweyD

Maybe if Apple would produce their products at a factory here in America then they wouldn’t have to worry about this kind of thing. That’s what you get for trying to use cheap labor.

  • Jinn

Have me one of these, might as well call it an e-book reader, useless….
Using it for now until i get meself a real one though :)
