Find My iPhone App Released by Apple

Sure, it’s called ‘Find My iPhone‘, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be used on your iPod Touch or iPad… Because it can! The Find my iPhone app has just been released by Apple, and it works just fine and dandy on any of your iOS powered devices, including the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad.

The purpose of this one is simple. If you ever lose your cherished device, you can use Find My iPhone to find it. Use is fairly straightforward. To start, you’ll need a MobileMe account (you can sign up for a free 60-day trial right here). Using your new login credentials, you can sign in and turn on the Find My iPhone feature for each device you want to locate. Once you’re all setup with MobileMe, pop open the Find My iPhone app and sign in with your MobileMe member name and password. Once in, Find My iPhone will display your missing device on a map and have it display a message or play a sound. To sweeten the pot a little bit, if you fear your device may have fallen into enemy hands (or you just have a lot of sensitive information on it!), you can use this one to remotely lock OR wipe it.

Very cool for sure. I’ve been waiting for some time now for an official ‘remote wipe’ app of sorts to come down the tube from Cupertino. Glad to see it has finally arrived… and best of all, it’s free (ok, ok… it’s true, MobileMe will cost you after your free trial is up. There’s always a catch!). That said, I still very much encourage you to sign up for the free MobileMe trial to give this one a spin… Especially if the data on your iOS powered device is important stuff.

Find My iPhone supports English, French, German and Japanese, and requires iOS 3.1.3 or later.

well i have it and it locates it to the exact house.i tested it on my iphone. it’s prett neat. my itouch was stolen but i can not locate it even with the App installed because it needs to be Wi-fi connected. My question is if i “wipe” it what does that do? is it like rebooting it for the thief to use it and so they can reprogram it or does prevent the thief to use it at all?
