The OTA (over-the-air) update for the Sprint HTC EVO 4G was previously halted because it was bricking certain devices, but it seems Sprint has addressed that issue and is updating EVO 4G’s in full swing. This time around, Sprint is pushing out an update that hopefully will not leave you with a dead device on your hands.
Users are reporting that the update has starting hitting their handsets, and this time with more success and less bricking. The update is slightly bigger, coming in at 30MBs, opposed to the first, which was only 21MBs. Users that have successfully updated their handsets have reported better battery life and speed enhancements, but not much more is known as to what the OTA helps with other than that. Still, with battery life enhancements, the update is a no brainer – we’ll take it!
HTC’s got some work cut out for them. First they need to get Android 2.1 working seamlessly on the EVO, and then they have to begin prepping for Android 2.2 Froyo. Their Sense UI is mostly to blame for the delays – it’s just harder to streamline an update to work with the Sense UI – but many users who like Sense probably won’t mind waiting. That said, these users may be waiting quite a while, and HTC has yet to give a real time line as to when Froyo will actually become available. “Near future” or “soon” isn’t any more comforting than “late summer.” You’re still going to be waiting, and “soon” could be anywhere from tomorrow to “late summer.”
Well, all you EVO users out there can be happy that the update is now coming your way, and shouldn’t kill your phone. Even if it does, the EVOs battery seems to be so atrocious that you should be willing to brick the phone to get even two more minutes out of the thing.
So, have you received the OTA yet? How did everything pan out? Is your EVO a paperweight now?
