We all love us some Skype for mobile, but more specifically, Skype for Symbian. After all, the aging platform is still the largest mobile operating system in terms of market share worldwide. What better way to chat with your international friends for free with services like Skype? Although it has been available for a short while now, the Symbian version of the VoIP app is getting a refresh with a few fixes and updates on version 1.1.
The first noticeable change is that the file size of the app has decreased dramatically, which is good news for your handset. Skype for Symbian is now down to just 10MB. Users are reporting that call quality is “scratchy” but overall par for the course when it comes to mobile VoIP services. Here’s a quick and dirty description from AllAboutSymbian:
If you’ve not logged on to Skype from your mobile for some time, there is a bit of a lag as it launches, while the client caches your old IM conversations and contacts, but once that’s down, it’s a solid application, offering you the ability to handle multiple IM conversations, group chats and voice calls easily. Latency was small and IM arrived on the mobile client within a second of arriving at our desktops.
If you’re a heavy user, whether it’s for the chat client or the voice services, you can go ahead and update your application now – or pick it up if you haven’t already or were unaware that Skype even existed for your Symbian handset.
