When it comes to navigating the rocky road to ideal GPS navigation Android smartphone pricing, the T-Mobile Garminfone seems to be on a continual search for ever lower price points. Following on a recent price cut that left the Garmin-Asus Garminfone at a $130 on-contract price, T-Mobile has managed to sniff out an even lower price. If you’re in the market for an Android handset, and you want your map data permanently loaded onto your handset, the Garminfone is your best bet – and it’s now just $100 when purchased with a new 2-year contract.
There’s a catch, though. There always is. To get that extra $30 discount from the $129.99 price on the Garminfone, you’ll have to be a current T-Mobile customer and have to sign a new 2-year contract with Magenta. You also need to sign up on a qualifying voice and data plan. Oh, and there’s a $50 mail-in rebate involved. If you’re a current T-Mobile customer, chances are good that you already have this email sitting in your inbox.
It’s no secret that the Garminfone hasn’t been the hottest-selling handset in T-Mobile’s smartphone stable. Sure, it’s outfitted with the Android OS, but the handset uses a highly customized Android 1.6 user interface, that will most likely have you scratching your head. The Magenta carrier has much more enticing Android phones in its portfolio these days, but if you’re looking for a GPS navigating smartphone with Android on tap and map data that lives on the phone itself, the Garminfone is really your best bet. While other GPS-enabled smartphones offer turn-by-turn GPS navigation services, they still rely on a wireless data connection to download map data on the fly – the Garminfone needs no such data connection, and will serve up directions and maps whenever you need them.
