BlackBerry Podcasts App Now Available to All

RIM’s podcasts application has been slow-cooking in the Beta Zone for awhile now, and it has apparently reached premium tenderosity. Users can now go get downloading in App World, and browse or search through categories, and take a look at what’s popular. Categories range the whole gamut, including sports, technology, travel, business, comedy, and everything in between. Both video and audio podcasts are supported, with downloading options for Wi-Fi, or 3G and Wi-Fi if you’re packing an unlimited plan.

I played with the app for a little bit last night on my shiny new BlackBerry Torch 9800, and so far I’m pretty unimpressed. The catalog is limited to what RIM puts in, and popular stuff like TED Talks aren’t in there – even Diggnation is only available in audio format. That wouldn’t be so bad if you could manually shoot in URLs, or better yet, launch into the Podcasts app when you click an appropriate link in the browser, but unfortunately that’s not the case. It looks like I’ll be loading up my old favourite, Podtrapper, to see if it plays nice with OS 6.

If you’re curious and want to give it a shot, Podcasts for BlackBerry is downloadable below, or find more information at RIM’s landing page.

In exploring RIM’s platform, he has learned what enterprises are looking for in mobility as well as what makes the innocuous BlackBerry so appealing to them. Recently Simon’s been covering RIM’s gradual move into an already-crowded consumer market, and the impact of burgeoning challengers, such as the iPhone, as well as long-time leaders, like Nokia, on BlackBerry’s advancement. With plenty of content under his belt, Simon will be branching off a bit to see what other smartphone manufacturers are working on while still using BlackBerry as a barometer.
