This past May, Google announced a bunch of new features for Android 2.2 Froyo and the Chrome web browser, including the Chrome to Phone (C2P) feature which allows you to push content from the browser to an Android 2.2 phone with just a click of a button. We’ve previously covered the Chrome to Phone feature in our Android 2.2 (Froyo) breakdown, but today, it’s been officially announced.
With the Chrome to Phone extension, you can easily send web content directly to your handset without touching it. Say you’re looking up directions to get to your favorite [insert favorite destination here]. With the extension installed on your handset and your browser, all you need to do is click the “Send to Phone” button in your browser, and Google Maps Navigation will immediately open up on your device and display the directions. This way, you won’t have to go manually search for your destination on your handset.
This applies to many Google applications as well, such as Finance. If you’re looking at Google Finance on your computer, and you want to send the content to your phone, just hit that Send to Phone button. If you have the Google Finance application installed on your handset, once you hit Send to Phone, you’ll receive a notification ask you if you’d like to open the content in your browser or within the Finance application itself. In the future, C2P will add a history feature, which will have information for later access.
Chrome to Phone won’t stop there, either. When Android 3.0 (Gingerbread) is released, expect this extension to play a bigger role. We expect Google to introduce an online Android Market, including Google Music, and we should see C2P allowing you to download Android applications and buy music, and have that content sent directly to your Android smartphone without so much as glancing at your handset.
If you have Android 2.2 running on your phone, you can find C2P in the Android Market. You must have the extension installed in your desktop Chrome web browserfor it to properly work, which you can find in the source link below. There’s also an extension for FireFox as well, so you won’t have to change browsers if you don’t want to.
Chrome to Phone and Voice Actions may not be the biggest features Android has ever released, but they are just the beginning of what should ‘blow our minds‘ in the future.
