Meizu has been making some of the best iPhone look-alikes ever seen, nevermind that they are essentially ripping off designs birthed in Cupertino – case in point, the Meizu M9. In May, we got word of the Meizu M9, and it sounded pretty nice, but we didn’t know how the set of specs would translate into final hardware. Now we’ve got more information on the device, and it’s looking sweeter than ever.
Back when we first caught wind of the M9 were pretty pleased to hear that the Meizu-made smartphone could possibly ship with Android 2.1 and a 3.6 inch touchscreen at a resolution of 720 × 480. Well, we’re happy to say that those rumors seem to have been slightly off-base, as Jack Wong has given us a little nugget of information about the M9’s progress. The device is said to ship this October with Android 2.2 Froyo in tow, with a heavily customized skin, of course. Better yet, it looks like the screen resolution has been jacked up from 720 x 480 to 960 x 640. Holy damn. That’s iPhone 4 Retina Display resolution, so it’s already kicking every other Android phone’s proverbial butt in the display technology department.
Unfortunately, we will probably never see it here in the US, and if we do, it won’t actually be usable as a phone. Thanks, China and your love for TD-SCDMA wireless standards. We don’t have much more to go by at the moment, but we do have some screen shots of what to expect with the M9’s skinned Android UI. Verdict: Eh. It doesn’t look bad, but it doesn’t look compelling enough that you’d want to switch to the phone. It looks reminiscent of HTC’s Sense UI, and love it or hate it, it’s a pretty nice overlay.
Let’s hope that this thing does actually ship sometime in October, but we wouldn’t be surprised if it was delayed. Still, it’s something to keep your eye one, even if you have not intentions of ever picking one up for yourself. The hardware seems solid, and the UI looks good enough to really rule the crop of Android phones today. Why it has to be from Meizu, I don’t know, but it’s sort of killing me inside.
