iPad finds its fans among fat-fingered sumo wrestlers in Japan

There’s a new market for the Apple iPad in Japan. Unsurprisingly sumo wrestlers have hard time using any of the modern smartphones due to their fat fingers. With the iPad they don’t have those problems as the on-screen keyboard has quite large characters, making it possible for them to type.

That prompted the Japan Sumo Association (JSA) to distribute 60 Apple-made tablets among all of the sport’s 51 training stables. “We will hand out the newest iPads to all the sumo stables to swiftly communicate what we need to,” JSA vice chairman Hiroyoshi Murayama said.

The move reportedly comes on the heels of a series of scandals affecting the sport, in which poor communications were considered to be part of the problem. Apparently, wrestlers unable to use the phones were relying on faxes and landline phones.

Of course, if this proves to be working for the big sumo boys, I’ve no doubts the initial order will be expanded to more units…
