According to a study commissioned by Best Buy Mobile, more than half of American mobile phone owners don’t know the month and year when their current mobile phone contract expires. Additionally, only 25% of respondents say they received a reminder notice that their contract was about to expire.
GfK Roper conducted the study, surveying a total of 1,004 people which apparently represent the national sample of U.S. adults — margin of error for this study is 3% for the full sample.
At 67%, the carrier is the number one reason people make mobile phone purchasing decisions. The mobile phone itself is behind 23% of respondents’ decisions, while the platform (i.e. Android, BlackBerry, iOS) – 10%.
Respondents also noted they expect much more than texting and calling from their mobile phone:
- 45% look for multimedia capabilities including music, video and camera
- 32% look for GPS navigation
- 29% want to replace landline phone
- 26% want to be able to access social networking sites
- 26% want to be Wi-Fi enabled
- 15% want to make eCommerce purchases from their mobile devices
- 15% want to be able to download a movie
- 14% want to be able to play games from their smartphone
As a super-geek, I guess I’m in all of the groups mentioned above. Where are you standing?
