It seems like cell phones have been stopping bullets countless times over the past few years, this time a Nextel device saves a man’s life. And if cell phones aren’t stopping bullets, they’re helping skiers from plunging to their deaths. While it isn’t the first time we’re hearing about a phone stopping a bullet, the stories are always fascinating nonetheless.

This time, Juan Camarena, 54, has his Nextel phone to thank when it saved his life after being shot at point blank range.

Camarena was sweeping the floors of an apartment building in New York City when the building’s supervisor, apparently annoyed at being replaced, shot him from just a few feet away.

Luckily, Mr. Camarena was able to get away as he “climbed up a floor when he felt a burn near his stomach as the bullet hit the Nextel phone tucked in a jacket pocket.”

He wasn’t completely unscathed, however, as he did manage to get a half-inch scratch. Still, it’s much better than what could have been if the phone wasn’t there.

The police are refusing to identify the shooter and is still at large.

The next time I’m out in a dangerous neighborhood, I’m wearing a vest made of stitched-together rugged Nextel phones.

Is that covered by handset insurance? Also – I’d get that phone bronzed!

I’v heard of spending too much time on the phone just shooting the bull, but shooting the phone. Lord took care of him, most of us just drop the phone and it shatters. Guess he found another way to call 911 after that.
