Sprint WiMax Has Officially Launched in New York City

After pockets of coverage here and there, and press release after press release, Sprint WiMax is officially a go in New York City. For the past few months, we’ve already seen several areas in the city – in almost every borough – light up with 4G coverage. Today, every last switch, button and bell was hit for Sprint to say that WiMax is live. But if you’ve already been getting coverage everywhere you live and work, you probably won’t see much of a difference.

Coverage will continue to expand to cities like San Francisco and L.A. next month while Sprint continues to pump more resources into its network. Despite the rumors of a switch to LTE, we were reminded last week by Dan Hesse that WiMax is Sprint’s future 4G solution.

If you’re in an area that previously didn’t have WiMax coverage, and you saw the 4G logos lighting up on your smartphones, USB modems or mobile hotspots today, feel free to let us know in the comments!

Check out the video below to see what Sprint has been up to in order to get its new high-speed mobile broadband network into gear.
