Apple has reduced the price on select refurbished iPad models, just in time for the holiday shopping crunch. Previously discounted $50, select models are now reduced by as much as $100. Specifically, the, sale extends to the Wi-Fi models, with the 16GB model retailing for $429 and the 64GB available for $599. The 64GB model offers the biggest discount, a respectable $100 off the original $699. Refurbished models include a one-year warranty, a new battery, and a new outer shell. The refurbished models look and perform like a new model, but are less expensive.
The model choice and timing of this sale is àpropos. The sale features the WiFi-enabled iPad, the version most likely to appeal to the average joe. The average consumer is not interested in a mobile companion with 3G and a higher price tag. They are looking for a home-based tablet for browsing on the couch or reading while in bed. The “special limited time price” imparts some urgency to the buyer and, of course, this is the peak of the holiday shopping season. Not everyone is going to drop $599 on a tablet or two; but for those with a bigger spending budget and an extra-special person on their list, this deal may be perfect. It is also great for those who have been on the fence about the iPad, waiting for Apple to drop the price.
Now of course, Apple has more than altruistic intentions in this sale. The Cupertino company is also looking to move some inventory. Rumors surrounding the iPad 2 have increased in frequency and detail recently and the suspected announcement may be coming as soon as January. The iPad 2 promises to be a respectable upgrade to the current model, with the addition of front and rear-facing cameras as its most prominent upgrade. A retina display, USB ports, and three-axis gyroscope round out the rumored features.
