Quad core phone dreams

You know that quad-core mobile processors are just around the corner and we expect to see the first such tablet (powered by NVidia’s Kal-el quad-core CPU) to be announced soon – Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime. After that we’ll most likely see first smartphones with quad-core processors unveiled at the CES in Las Vegas… or at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. In any case, such devices are coming and we’ll love ‘em. As a matter of fact, I would expect the next Samsung Galaxy S product (Galaxy S III) to be one of the first smartphones in the series.

Aside from Samsung, other handset makers will also have their own products with next-gen processors. The rumor is that Apple may use Samsung for its upcoming quad-core A6 processor, while Qualcomm and NVidia are preparing their own processors (and TI we’re pretty sure), which may be used by other companies — Motorola seems pretty comfortable with TI recently.

So how we imagine the perfect smartphone with a quad-core processor?

That would be the Nexus Galaxy with LG’s True HD IPS display, LTE connectivity and a better camera (8-megapixel at least). As far as I can tell, that will be the dream phone of 2012 and the one that will “fix” all of the new Nexus phone’s “flaws,” as detailed by Stefan in this post.

What do you say about it? Do you think I’m missing something for the perfect smartphone with quad-core processor? Don’t hesitate to drop your two cents in the comments form below…

Many people are obsessed with the latest and greatest hardware for their phones. That alone is not going to help if the software is not good enough. What Apple has done is that they have a not-so-high-end hardware but the end user experience is far better than Android. iOS is just so much smoother in operation. Maybe Android should concentrate on that for a while instead of just upping the cores and clock speeds which I hope they did for ICS. Battery life is a major bottle neck and more cores and GHz will just compound the problem unless the technology matures. I would rather have a phone which lasts a day and gives me decent performance than a high end phone that dies out in a couple of hours.

Should we pass on the Nexus and other Q4 releases in hopes that a good quality quad 4 comes in Q1 2012?  Who says jump now?  Who says wait?

    Postal Jim,

There will always be something around the corner

I’m in the jump camp. Although the nexus has a few niggles, and is being launched midway through the first year of cortex A9, it will be the flagship android device with the best OS support. For me, because of the lack of OS support from the likes of HTC etc, the nexus is the only viable android device. It is also has “2012 features” in the form of it’s display and NFC.

I also get the feeling that quad core CPU’s aren’t going to be effectively utilised in 2012, and the only big draw is the “fifth core” in the tegra 3 chips which will improve battery life.

It is very much up to you, and which device you are coming from. But I think that no one six months ago anticipated that October would be “Mobile Month” (what with the iPhone announcement, Galaxy Nexus, and The Nokia Windows Phone Devices). The probably isn’t a better time to buy
