Windows Phone Mango, the current version of Microsoft’s mobile operating system, is due to get two updates this year. One of them called Tango has been rumored to be all about supporting low end devices and additional markets. Karthik Ragubathy, who was in attendance at a Microsoft developer event in India over the weekend, heard some information about Tango that’s yet to be released to the public. He says that Mango currently supports 35 different languages, iOS supports 34 languages, Android supports 55 languages, and that the desktop version of Windows can do 125 different languages. With Tango, that 35 languages figures gets bumped up to 120, making it one of the most internationally friendly mobile platforms. Considering how many countries Nokia sells their devices in, this is obviously a good thing. Another tidbit that Ragubathy overheard was that Tango will enable developers to write applications using C++, something that game developers are likely going to appreciate, and those who want to squeeze every last bit of performance out of their apps.
The other update to Windows Phone, known as Apollo, is going to come out towards the end of the year. Information about that update isn’t as widely known, but rumors say that it’s all about performance. We’re talking dual core support, high resolution 1280 x 720 pixel screens, NFC, and who knows what else. Ragubathy didn’t hear much about that, but something tells us that when we’re in Spain at Mobile World Congress next month we’re going to hear plenty about it. Last year Microsoft showed off multitasking, copy and paste, and live tiles, features that they eventually called Mango a few months later. It wouldn’t be hard then to imagine Microsoft doing the same thing this year, as in not talking about Apollo, but showing off some things that are coming to the platform in the future.
