This is Sony’s first Mobile World Congress since it separated from Ericsson. Now that it’s Sony Mobile Communications, we’ve been waiting for the company to roll out some hot, new handsets. We recently got our hands on the PS Vita and today we look forward to some quality time with the Xperia U and the Xperia P .
The Xperia U is Sony’s entry-level offering and includes a 3.5-inch Reality Display, a 1GHz dual-core processor, and a rear-facing 5-megapixel camera with an Exmor R sensor that records 720p video. It’ll ship in the middle of Q2 2012, globally.
There’s also the Xperia P which ups the specs a bit with an aluminum, unibody design, 1GHz dual-core processor, and an 8-megapixel shooter with Sony’s Exmor R sensor. It also has a 4-inch qHD Reality Display with new White Magic technology that offers bright colors and excellent outside viewing.
As a premium phone, the Xperia P supports NFC-enabled Smart tags that let you scan a tag and launch a suite of apps. Sony used the example of a runner who can scan a tag that’ll launch her fitness apps as she goes out the door. Available in three finishes, the Xperia P will roll out in mid-Q2 2012.
Lastly, Sony gave us another look at the Xperia S , a high-end handset which features a 1.5 GHz dual-core processor, 12-megapixel camera, and a 4.3-inch HD display. It goes on sale this week in Barcelona. We will have some hands-on time with the Xperia P and U handsets. So check back soon!
