Orange UK is in the midst of a mobile ticketing trial with rail and bus operator, Stagecoach. The two companies unveiled the mobile contactless transport ticketing system, which could lead to a nationwide rollout across select bus and rail services during next year.
Trial participants in Cambridgeshire, each of which got a Quick Tap enabled mobile handset, are able to receive, store and validate their bus tickets using nothing but their mobile phone.
Quick Tap is the umbrella name for Orange’s NFC services, which we’ve already covered in the past, that comes with a specially designed app that sings along the local bus network’s smart-card readers.
Stagecoach Group’s Finance Director Martin Griffiths seems pretty bullish on the technology and hopes that caring out a review of the findings will show potential for expansion of the scheme to even more passengers…
