Microsoft knows its next version of Windows Phone must be rock solid in order to get more users on board. In that sense, the next iteration of the platform will pack a number of new features, including (here’s the news) a “one handed and next gen soft keyboard” — which will most definitely compliment the default QWERTY interface.

The image above was taken from a leaked Microsoft Research presentation, showing how users could thumb-type on a touchscreen using only one hand. It looks pretty neat and reminiscent of the curved keyboards found in the old Microsoft UMPCs. I never thought those keyboards were that popular but what do I know…

In addition, Apollo will also provide additional typing options with a special accent on national Soft Keyboards — for instance, there will be a whole new layout for folks typing in Korean.

All said, we’re glad to see Microsoft thinking about all the details to make its upcoming mobile platform much better. Whether that will help them grow their market share is a different story…
