Flipboard, the super popular reader app, has decided to step beyond its usual duties of offering just a reading experience to users. The mobile application will now bring YouTube channels to the mix, by adding a “TV” channels section to its sidebar. Flipboard has been laser focused on improving the user experience on its app, as the company released an update to its Android app not too long ago.

Making a specific play for audiovisual content inside its magazine-like applications is a smart move by Flipboard. The company is on a role as of late, with its recently announced 20 million users flipping three billion pages per month, spending an average 86 minutes per month, and sharing 14.5 million times socially from the content they read.

In my opinion, a move like this is great because Flipboard depends heavily on social networking sites to deliver its application reading content. It would be extremely damaging if a company like Twitter decides to block some of its core functionality such as being allowed to sniff through a user’s contacts. Getting firmly behind video content gives the company some versatility, and protects its brand from such a thing like blocking contacts.

Who out there uses Flipboard?
