Gamers can ring in the new year with a bang, since there’s a bevy of free downloadable games kicking off 2014. The Xbox one and PS4 might have ruled the holidays at retail, but the last-gen consoles aren’t gone yet. Both the PS3 and XBox 360 are getting some AAA titles for free next month, and the PS4 and Vita are getting some love too. For the complete line-up, read on!
Playstation Plus Instant Game Collection gets sweeter every month!
Sony’s Playstation Plus has been seriously hooking it up since it began its Instant Game Collection. This month Sony gave PS3 gamers Borderlands 2 for free, and the PS Vita got Sonic & All Stars Racing Transformed among others. If you can believe it, Sony’s bringing it even harder for the first month of 2014!
PS3 gamers will get free downloads of BioShock Infinite, DmC, and Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons. Bioshock Infinite is the third installment of the epic Bioshock franchise, and one of the best games of 2013. It’s a favorite here at IntoMobile too, so be sure to grab this game!
DmC is the reboot of the Devil May Cry series, which released in 2013. While many decried the “cool” update to protagonist Dante’s signature look, the game quickly silenced the naysayers upon release. DmC did well with critics and gamers and is an excellent freebie!
While Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons might not have the AAA pedigree of the first two, the indie game was the sleeper hit of 2013. Lauded for its engrossing story and unique gameplay style. The game has won several Best of the Year awards and maintains a 90 on Metacritic!
But wait, there’s more!
Sony’s handheld, the PS Vita, is getting the latest in the Worms franchise for free and a popular brain training title. Worms: Battle Islands brings some massive cartoon battle actions to the PS Vita. Smart As…. (that’s AS, people!) brings the popular brain training genre to the Vita with a series of quizzes and mini-games.
Sony’s bouncing new baby, the PS4, gets a nod too with the indie title Don’t Starve. Billed as an “uncompromising wilderness survival game full of science and magic,” Don’t Starve is the latest quirky indie freebie for the new console. It’s no surprising that none of the few AAA titles for the PS4 are being offered free, but it will be nice to see the new Playstation get a little more meat in future PS Plus updates. That said, Don’t Starve looks like a fun little game and the price is right!
Microsoft Games with Gold finally steps up its game!
Microsoft’s Games with Gold program has long been seen as little more than an also-ran afterthought in response to Sony’s Instant Game Collection. Since it began last summer, Games with Gold has offered up a couple freebies each month. If this happened in a vacuum it might be fine, but Microsoft’s handouts of 5-year-old games, obscure indies and the like seem a little piss-poor next to the quality Sony’s been dropping.
Let’s hope Microsoft’s January Games with Gold line-up is the beginning of something, because for once it looks great. While it’s a little disappointing that the Xbox One isn’t getting any freebies, the 360 is getting 2 high quality games for free this month!
Xbox Live Gold members will be able to download Lara Croft and the Gaurdian of Light and Sleeping Dogs free! Sleeping Dogs usually runs for $19.99. It released in late 2012 and was well recieved for its Hong Kong underground setting and open world gameplay. Lara Croft and the Gaurdian of light is a couple of years old but has aged well, and it still goes for $14.99 normally.
Yes these games aren’t from this year, and Microsoft’s offering still trails behind Sony’s. But this is a major step in the right direction from Microsoft and hopefully quality modern titles will keep coming every month.
So there you have it folks. It looks like 2014’s going to be a good year. Which free game are you most excited for? Sound off in the comments!
