The fact that there are few handy travel apps available for the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad users hasn’t stopped FareCompare.com from releasing its own product. And they have an added twist – alerting users in real-time (using push notifications) when fares drop significantly on a chosen route. That “significant price drop” is actually $15 below the current lowest fare for U.S. tickets or at least 5% below international tickets.
Before you go all crazy and click on the AppStore link below, let me tell you the downsides:
- First, the application only looks at Orbitz for fares. Although Orbitz has quite solid offering, there are other sites that allow you to travel for less and including them would obviously provide more choice to the consumer.
- Second, you can’t specify individual airports which is a must for major metro areas with more than a single airport.
- And third, Southwest Airlines is not supported!
Finally, I would like to see an option to define the price drop when I want to be alerted. 15 bucks on a $400 dollar trip doesn’t mean a lot and I wouldn’t like to be annoyed with push notifications just to learn that my flight is now available for $385…
