Cablevision looking to build wireless broadband network – WiFi access to cable customers

Cablevision to create high-speed wireless WiFi networkWireless broadband solutions like HSPA, WiMAX and LTE have been argued to be ringing the death knell for WiFi, but that isn’t stopping cable TV provider, Cablevision, from building out their own wireless broadband solution based on WiFi.

The high-speed wireless network from Cablevision will be built on existing infrastructure and will use WiFi rather than WiMAX or LTE to bring broadband internet access  to its cable customers. The network build-out is expected to cost $100 per customer in and around New York City.

The WiFi network should bring high-speed data access to customers’ handsets like iPhones and BlackBerries as well as laptop and desktop computers. The service will be offered for free to existing Cablevision customers and will be offered for a fee to non-subscribers.

Cablevision is apparently looking to use their WiFi network to launch mobile phone services in the future. Looks like Cablevision wants to make the jump from the cable TV game to the wireless provider game. Good for them.
