Renesas Technology Corp will collaborate with the world’s largest cellular phone manufacturer, Nokia Corp, on the development of platform software for handsets, the Nikkei reported, without identifying sources. The Finnish firm will make its S60 platform software compatible with the Japanese semiconductor manufacturer’s SH-Mobile system chips, which are currently used by domestic manufacturers and South Korean-based LG Electronics Inc, according to the business daily.
Nokia, which buys chips mainly from US-based Texas Instruments Inc, has never used a Japanese chipmaker as a supplier of chips for platform software.
By clinching a supply contract with Nokia, Renesas aims to increase its SH-Mobile output to 50 mln units in fiscal 2008 from 20 mln in fiscal 2006, the Nikkei said.
