Must Watch Video: 32 minutes with Martin Cooper, inventor of the mobile phone

Martin Cooper, while working for Motorola, invented the first portable (as in you could carry it with you) mobile phone. In the video below he spends a little over half an hour and talks about spectral efficiency, explains how mobile phone networks work, what causes congestion, how to solve congestion, and the FCC’s upcoming plan to free up 500 MHz worth of spectrum. Chalk this up as a video that actually taught me a thing or two about mobile networks.

Of course the host of the program has to ask Martin what mobile he uses, and his answer is that he uses the latest and greatest and likes to try everything there is on the market, but as of right now he has a Motorola Droid and a Jitterbug. Fun fact: his wife invented the Jitterbug.

If you’ve got the time, I highly recommend you sit down and check this video out. You’ll learn about how far we’ve come, where we’re going, and why more spectrum may actually be the lazy answer to solving the problems we’re experiencing today.
