Poynt for iPhone Updated with Grid View, Improved Call Gesture

Poynt’s local search app for iPhone has been updated with a few tiny, but worthwhile features. For one, the home screen which traditionally showed all of the search categories in a carousel, but now you can view them in a grid format with a quick pinch. The calling function, which dialed to search results when you brought the phone to your face, now uses the accelerometer as well as the proximity sensor for better responsiveness.

Poynt for iPhone has only been around about two months, but has been doing very well among the free apps available on iTunes. If you haven’t seen our quick video from CES, Poynt helps you find restaurants, movies, people, businesses, and even gas prices based on your current GPS or cell-site location. Once you have the results, you can map directions, make calls, check reviews, and lots of other contextual info.

Some of those search fields aren’t available on the iPhone just yet, but that version does have some pretty slick augmented reality navigation to help you find your destination. I’ve been using Poynt’s BlackBerry app off and on for some time now, and it’s really the small things, like reverse phone lookup from the native phone app, home screen weather, two-click access to movie trailers, and in-app restaurant reservation that made it stand out.
