“Cells” mobile phone concept redefines keypad design

Cells mobile phone concept from Tim Wong uses dimpled keypad

We love concept phones. We’ve said it before, and we just said it again. It’s just fun to imagine what the mobile phone will look like in the near future. But, it’s not often that we see a concept that could actually make it to market within a reasonable time-frame. This “Cells” mobile phone concept from Timo Wong, of Hong Kong, isn’t so radical in its design or technology that the only place it’s destined to go is the drawing board.

The “Cells” mobile phone’s innovation lies in the keypad design. Rather than separating the keypad numbers by lines or buttons, the buttons are separated by dimples in the smooth surface – like an egg crate or fruit holder. The idea is to bring a seamless design that still intuitively defines separate keys.

Each number seems to be divided into one cell of its own. Separated by what seems like an invisible boundary, the contours evoke a delightful sensorial experience on something we touch and hold every day, like a cellular phone.

Like we said, it’s possible that this idea could actually make it to market in a production handset. It’s a cool idea, we’d love to see it out in the wild!
