Samsung Galaxy S Pro to be Sprint’s next 4G phone

The EVO 4G is already delighting many users but Sprint subscribers may soon be getting another handset that can utilize its WiMax services. The Samsung Galaxy S Pro will be the carrier’s second 4G handset and it looks pretty darn good.

The handset should be like the excellent Galaxy S but with a full, five-row QWERTY keyboard. That means it should rock a similar 4-inch Super AMOLED screen that is just absolutely stunning. I was very impressed with the Galaxy’s screen and think Apple’s Retina Display has a lot of work ahead to take the “top screen” slot.

The Galaxy S Pro should also rock a 1 GHz processor, a 5-megapixel camera with LED flash, Android 2.1, and 512 MB of RAM. Remember, we’ve heard rumblings that the graphics processor in the Samsung handset should be pretty powerful. The processor, code-named Hummingbird, can reportedly provide up to three times the triangles per second as an iPhone 3GS. That could lead to some pretty cool games and apps.

As for Sprint, this type of device makes a lot of sense as it won’t necessary cannibalize EVO 4G sales because of the full QWERTY keyboard. Let’s hope the Galaxy S Pro gets better battery life than the EVO, though.

Sprint is the only U.S. carrier with a 4G phone but that won’t be the case for long. Verizon’s 4G network, based on Long-Term Evolution, is already being rolled out across the country and the nation’s largest carrier said it will have up to five 4G handsets by the middle of next year. It won’t be the first to rock an LTE handset, as little MetroPCS is planning to release a Samsung 4G smartphone by the end of the year.

Looks like we’re in store for some 4G goodness. Hop after the break for another shot of the Galaxy S Pro and our hands-on video of the Galaxy S. You won’t be sorry.
