T-Mobile to Android Fans: No Cupcake for You

The Cupcake Nazi

All those G1 fans frothing at the bit for an on-screen keyboard, video recording, stereo Bluetooth and the other goodies promised by the Cupcake update will have to hold their horses; a T-Mobile rep has dashed the hopes of anything coming out before the end of the month in a recent forum post.

According to the Android team, “Cupcake,” which is the code name for an Android software build, is still a work in progress that is considered to be a development branch and not for general availability.

We will update you as T-Mobile G1 software updates are made available to T-Mobile customers.

To be fair, that’s some pretty vague wording. Surely nothing gets out to the devices without going through T-Mobile first, so expecting feature updates as soon as Google makes them is a little unrealistic, but it’s hardly saying we won’t get any G1 updates. Rather, it might be more of a clarification: Cupcake is a whole branch rather than an individual update, and will actually be the source of new features. It’s hard to say though, since they call it a software build too. I dunno, what do you guys make of the T-Mobile statement?

UPDATE: Oh, hai. Here’s some more official-looking info on the Cupcake branch, which has merged with a larger master branch. Hrm. Colour me confused. Was T-Mobile PR simply misinformed, or is cupcake still operating independently?
