iPhone 5 owners new to Verizon should opt out of the carrier’s intrusive tracking

Last year, Verizon Wireless changed its privacy policy and started anonymously tracking mobile phone usage among its customers. All new customers, including iPhone 5 owners, are automatically opted in to this program when they activate a line of service with the carrier. The anonymous tracking collects information like the URLs of websites that you visit and your device’s location.

Verizon assures customers that this information is anonymous and can not be used to identify you. It is used  for “business and marketing reports” and for targeted mobile ads. Most of the information is used internally, and some is shared with third-party companies.

If you don’t want Verizon collecting this information from your iPhone 5, then you must login to your My Verizon account and go to Verizon’s MyPrivacy section (www.verizonwireless.com/myprivacy). You can opt out of the tracking by selecting “Don’t Share my CPNI” for each mobile phone number on your account. CPNI stands for Customer Proprietary Network Information, if you are wondering.
