T-Mobile Q1 Financial Results Not-So-Rosy

t-mobile-logo2008 was solid for T-Mobile. 30 million customers, almost 1 million new subscribers, and things were looking great… That was, until the latter part of last year when things took a turn for the worse. Now, after having released their Q1 results for 2009 we can clearly see that T-Mobile is facing the heat.

Only 415,000 new subscribers were added in the first quarter of this year. Compare that to 621,000 in Q4 of last year, and 981,000 from one year ago. Not a good trend. Contract churn also fell slightly to 2.3% from 2.4% in Q4 2008.

Amidst all the bad news, T-Mobile is still pushing forward to nearly double the coverage of its 3G UMTS network. The goal is to increase coverage from 107 million POPs up to 205 million. I certainly hope they meet this mark.

I can only hope things start to even out soon and begin a slight trend upwards during the remainder of the year. The US economy is showing signs of recovery, and that will surely be reflected in the success/failure of telecoms nationwide.
