To boost the telecom equipment industry, the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (Assocham) has asked the government to reduce import duty on all capital goods equipment and curtail Customs tariff on all goods used for telecommunications equipment manufacture, telecom shelters, power conditioners and sheet metal to 0 per cent from the current 12.50 per cent.

In its pre-Budget memorandum submitted to the government, Assocham also sought Customs tariff reduction on raw material, inputs and components required to manufacture electronic items, including telecom equipment, to 0 per cent, a press release said.

With a number of foreign direct investment (FDI) proposals materialising soon, the government should create an eco system that not only invigorates investment but also benefits consumers and creates employment opportunities.

The move is likely to benefit many global telecom companies, including Nokia and Motorola, which have started their manufacturing plants in India.

Wouldn’t it be nice if all countries were this nice? I mean the leaders of India realize that they need infrastructure as well as cheaper mobile devices. This is creating an incentive for Nokia to work it’s tail off to provide this country with the much needed communications equipment required to be apart of the 21st century lifestyle.
