Qualcomm logo thinking about getting into mobile tv industry in TaiwanQualcomm’s chip-set business is troubled, to say the least. These guys are getting hit from all sides with more lawsuits and trade bans than their head legal counsel can deal with. So, what’s an embattled patent-monger to do? Well, if you’re Qualcomm, you get into a new industry – maybe. Word on the street has it that Qualcomm is teaming up with all manner of Taiwanese companies to bring new technology to the Taiwanese Mobile TV market.

The chip-making giant recently teamed up with China Network Systems, Vibo Telecom, Asia Pacific Telecom and Taiwan Television Enterprise (TTV) to win a mobile TV trial broadcast license. And, Qualcomm’s just entered into a joint-venture with Japan’s KDDI, MediaFLO Japan Planning, to deliver MediaFLO-based mobile TV to Japan.

Is Qualcomm resigning their patent position against the likes of Nokia and Broadcom, choosing to focus on the growing mobile TV industry? Probably not, chip-sets are huge business. But, like they say, it’s never good to put all your eggs in one basket – especially when said basket is filled with more patent litigation than eggs.
