When Sprint decided to label WiMAX technology as “4G”, it wasn’t that long until the other operators followed suite and slapped the 4G moniker on their respective networks. Sascha Segan from PC Mag recently had a chance to speak to Chris Pearson, the President of 4G Americas, and he asked him just what the hell 4G actually means according to the organization who is responsible for defining the standards that make our mobile devices work in the first place. Pearson’s response: “At 4G Americas, our typical line is HSPA+ 21 … Read more
LightSquared, once the darling of Sprint, is now a case study in how not to launch a wireless broadband network. After a series of missteps that led to the FCC rejecting its application for wireless service, the company is now on the verge of declaring bankruptcy. According to a Wall Street Journal report, negotiations with the company’s creditors is not going well. Light Squared has until 5 PM Monday to work out a deal, but sources told the WSJ that the two sides are still far apart. If negotiations fail … Read more
In a me-too move, RadioShack has announced that they too will be offering a $50 discount on the iPhone. Yesterday, RadioShack started selling the iPhone 4 (8GB) for $49, and the iPhone 4S for $149 (16GB), $249 (32GB), and $349 (64GB). The move comes after multiple smaller, regional retailers started selling Apple’s iPhones at these lower rates, and after Target announced they would be cutting $50 off the iPhone prices as well. The $50 price reduction ends June 30th, so you’ll want to act soon if you want to save a cool … Read more
The HTC Evo 4G LTE will be coming to Sprint later this month and the handset promises to be quite a powerful device. We got our hands on a review unit at CTIA 2012, so let’s take a quick look before our official review. Think of the Evo 4G LTE as the Sprint version of the One X internally but its design is all its own. I actually expected to not like it because the backing seems to be made of three different materials: a glossy top, metalic red band … Read more
Fresh off its chat about its 4G LTE plans, Sprint has released a Sierra Wireless Tri-Fi hotspot that can handle CDMA 3G, WiMax 4G and 4G LTE. It looks like it’s a triple threat. Sprint said it will be able to intelligently shift between the three technologies for a seamless customer experience and other than the novelty of having WiMax and LTE, it’s like your average hotspot. It can create a personal Internet cloud for up to 8 WiFi devices, has a screen for battery life and signal strength, supports … Read more
During a “Network Vision” event at CTIA 2012, Sprint reiterated its plans to roll out 4G LTE but the company is insistant that its CDMA 3G technology won’t be going away any time soon. Sprint’s SVP Bob Azzi said the network rollout is meant to improve the company’s 3G network, as well as deploy 4G LTE in the 1900 MHz and 800 Mhz bands (the last one is pending FCC approval). T-Mobile will also be rolling out its 4G LTE and it took some not-so-subtle shots at Sprint while at … Read more
It’s official. The next in the EVO line of devices, the HTC EVO 4G LTE, will be hitting Sprint stores on May 18th for $199.99, in line with previous rumors. Of course, unless you’re in one of the handful of cities that will be getting LTE service this quarter, you’ll be relegated to Sprint’s worst-in-class 3G network, though you will have a device that’s future-proof. Sprint’s LTE network is expected to kick into heavy rollout mode in early 2013, so your wait may be longer than you’d like to bear. … Read more
It looks like Sprint will be seriously beefing up its portfolio of LTE devices later this year. The rumor is that the LG LS970 (internal name “LG G”) will be joining the Now Network at some point in the fourth quarter of this year. What makes this an interesting news is that this is the first time we’re hearing about a smartphone that packs both a quad-core processor and LTE radio — if you look at the HTC One X for example, its LTE version rocks Qualcomm’s dual-core Snapdragon S4 … Read more
PCWorld went on a bit of an adventure recently to put AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile and Verizon’s 3G and 4G networks to the test. They traveled to 13 cities across the United States — Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, New Orleans, New York, San Francisco, San Jose, Seattle, and Washington, D.C. – and tested data speeds in a total of 127 different locations. The tests between the carriers are broken down into four categories: 3G download speed, 3G upload speed, 4G download speed, and 4G upload speed. The … Read more
Before we get to today’s news, you need some backstory: Nokia started work on a Linux based mobile operating system called Maemo back in 2005. It got better over time, just have a look at the Nokia N9 to get an idea of what we’re talking about. Now Maemo wasn’t the only Linux mobile OS on the market trying to become successful, there was Intel’s Moblin platform, which the chip company was attempting to get laptop makers to use. Nokia teamed up with Intel, merged Moblin and Maemo, and called … Read more
