Awhile back we had heard rumblings that Rolando 2 was coming to the iPhone very soon… I had actually almost forgotten about it, until last night when we received an email about it. Yes, thankfully, Rolando 2: Quest for the Golden Orchid is now available in the App Store! It’ll set you baak $9.99, but in my opinion, it’s one of the best puzzle/strategy games out there.
No ‘Lite’ version of the game is available just yet, but I would not be surprised if one pops up in the near future. The original Rolando game spawned a free version as well, but it appeared some time after original release. So, if $9.99 is a little too rich for your blood, just hang on… a free version may become available.
EpicTilt is out with an interesting iPhone/iPod Touch game called TapStar, which aims to get some love from the Tap Tap Revenge fans.
Their trick is offering the exclusive music content from Sony Music, including tunes from such artists as Britney Spears, John Mayer, Pink, TLC and Warrant Heaven. Of course, there’s also an option to buy a song you’re currently playing from the iTunes, and if proves successful, it’s fair to guess other labels will jump on board as well.
As for the gameplay, it’s slightly different that the likes of Guitar Hero - there are four corner buttons you should touch when an arrow appears. Then the “classic” part comes in as the accuracy of your taps are measured and number of sequential hits you can pull off will power your high score…
Enough said, AppStore link is here. Happy playing.
Just received note from our friends at Bplay that ALL products are on sale at Bplay… 30% off that is. All you need to do is enter coupon code ‘JULY‘ on checkout. This sale is on now, through July 6th, so go ahead and check out all of the BlackBerry gaming goodness before it’s too late!

Yes, finally a Crokinole game for mobile! Ha ha, not sure if anyone out there is familiar with this great little game, but around these parts my friends refer to me as ‘Old Croke’. I love the game.
New for Android is Carrom3D Pro. The game features not only the classic game of Crokinole, but 3 other ‘Carrom’ games for your enjoyment. The developers at Kinetic Bytes put a lot of effort into getting the physics just right, and they’ve done a pretty good job. In fact, you can even adjust the physics of the whole game via settings built right into the app. Adjust the sliding friction, rolling friction, coefficient of restitution and more. This makes for a totally custom gaming experience… Just tweak the settings until you get it how you like it!
If you’re a fan of Crokinole or Carrom, you’ll want to pick this one up right now. It’s available in the Android Market via a free trial, or you can throw $1.99 down for the full version.
SPB Software is out with another educational game called SPB Geo Game — it’s about time they remove the “SPB” part from their titles, don’t you think?
Anyway, the game is designed to educate players on world’s capitals and national flags. On that note, SPB’s press release says that today’s global diversity is represented by 235 countries (including small islands and independent territories), 235 flags, and 234 capitals. SPB Geo Game helps users memorize all this information and “widens one’s horizons in a fun way,” as a result.
The finger-friendly app also features 3G globe view, as well as educational animations. It is readily available for touchscreen smartphones running either Windows Mobile or Android, and you can grab it for $4.95.
By now everyone realizes that iPhone/iPod Touch is a powerful gaming platform. That’s why we were not surprised to see a number of classic games being ported to the Apple (NSDQ: AAPL)’s mobile platform.
Next in line is Rick Dangerous, the famous character from the good ol’ days of Commodore 64 and Amiga.
If you haven’t played Rick, you’re either too young or too old. It’s a classic platform game, which sees you leading an Indiana Jones-like character through a number of levels. As far as I can recall — and you bet your ass I played Rick Dangerous a lot — it was everything but an easy game. Quite the contrary, I’ve spent hours and hours trying to solve some levels, trying to find my way through the Ancient Egypt, the Amazon and some Nazi strongholds.
As there’s no D-pad on the iPhone/iPod Touch, you’ll see controls on the screen. At first it may feel weird for the old-school Rick fans, but after some time, it’s not a big deal as long as you make it to the next level.
If you had any reservations about 3D gaming on the Palm (NSDQ: PALM) Pre, the above video might change your mind. ZodTTD, the genius that developed many emulators for the iPhone has rooted his Pre, and loaded up his PlayStation emulator onto the device. Many bats are still in need of being flushed out of the cave, but as you can see in the video, the basics are there. Can’t wait for more news from ZodTTD on a final version of the emulator for the Pre.
A few notes on development from ZodTTD:
There is no sound output (but it’s emulated), as Pulse Audio is required for the Palm Pre, and I have yet to support it. It will come soon.
I have not figured out hardware rotation or scaling, or whether it is possible. Until then I am using the raw framebuffer device and blitting 320×240 software scaled.
I figured out how to read the keypad device on the Palm Pre, though there are times it fails to give a keyup event, making keys “stick”. This is annoying and I’m looking for a workaround.
As things progress I will have fullscreen landscape working as well.
I’m particularly excited about this for one reason alone: The Pre has physical buttons! Don’t get me wrong, I love playing games on my iPhone… But heck, sometimes a guy just needs a few buttons, y’know?

National Geographic is getting ready to go mobile, big time. To help them along the way, the TV network is joining forces with RealNetworks, and together the two companies will bring five casual games burst with educational material to mobile users. We’re not hearing which platforms they will support, but we did caught the “cross-platform” word, meaning they’re not talking “just iPhone,” which is arguably the single most popular platform to develop for these days.
Commenting on the news, National Geographic’s Paul Levine said: “Our Interactive Platforms division continues to field a broad array of highly engaging and entertaining consumer products with universal appeal across multiple platforms, incorporating the best of National Geographic’s mission, brands and franchises. Millions of families and gamers of all ages around the globe are playing our games on consoles, handhelds, mobile phones and online, and we are thrilled to work with such creative and innovative partners to deliver next-generation ‘AAA’ titles and virtual experiences to our global audiences.”
We’re certainly looking forward to see the big company such as National Geographic taking mobile seriously and are looking forward to see what they can bring to the table…
Michael Jackson was in a few classic video games, dontchaknow? With the help of an emulator on iPhone, you can get your moonwalk on and blow up some monsters while you’re at it. Bad, Beat It, Smooth Criminal, Billie Jean, and Another Part of Me are all featured in their original MIDI glory. NES v3 is probably the most popular emulator for iPhone, and can be picked up in Cydia. The installation process is a bit tricky, but this video sums it up pretty nicely: open Cydia, go to Manage, Sources, Edit, Add, and punch in http://apt.123Locker.com (remember the capital “L”). After that, you should be able to browse Games under Sections, and find Moonwalker under the Genesis console.
Received word from Bplay the other day that they’re having a sale. A pretty good one at that. Select BlackBerry games and themes are on offer for only $0.99 cents. Yowza. Bplay always has solid games and themes for the BlackBerry (NSDQ: RIMM), so it’s certainly worth a look.
Notable games going for a buck include Breeders’ Cup Horse Racing, Daytona USA, Cribbage (I love Cribbage), Ka-Glom (cool puzzle game), Brain Up and Spider Solitaire. Well over 10 themes are on sale as well, so if you’re interested check ‘em out. For a full list of games and themes with purchase links, make the jump.
