UK: Carphone Warehouse profits leap up!

By Ben Robinson on Tuesday, June 16th, 2009 at 2:03 PM PST

logo cpw UK: Carphone Warehouse profits leap up!Cellular News is reporting that Carphone Warehouse has had a big jump in full-year profit from £73 million last year to £550 million this year - this being due to a big gain from the sale of its retail business.

The company is now in two parts, with the fixed-line telephony and ISP (TalkTalk) being one bit, and the retail arm (called Best Buy Europe) being the other.

Well it’s both impressive, and I suppose also not indicative of regular profits - the fact that CW had that much value in it’s retail arm does give some indication as to the good business they’ve been doing. Certainly I have found them to be one of the better shops in the high street.

UK: AMP3: iRiver P7 is one nice bit of kit!

By Ben Robinson on Sunday, June 7th, 2009 at 10:00 AM PST
In Multimedia, UK Retail

iriver p7 UK: AMP3: iRiver P7 is one nice bit of kit!

One site I do like to frequent for tech-goodness is AMP3 - or Advanced MP3 Players, to you and me! AMP3 have some great kit on board, and it’s very music-centric - just my cup of tea!

I happened across the iRiver P7 just browsing on the site, and it is NICE - check out the pic above. Sometimes I think we might forget that certain gadgets can excel at one thing to such an extent that they deserve to be standalone devices - case in point: the P7!

AMP3 have a nice summary:

The bare facts are that this is a 4.3” touchscreen media player, with great video support and Flash based memory (up to 16GB).  It features the important flexibility of additional memory expansion, via microSD.  iRiver fulfil expectations with a wide range of functionality and features, but this isn’t the main talking point of the player.

The really unique feature is the User Interface – iRiver call this Magazine UI.  It makes the process of navigating and using the player much more familiar to more people, by arranging items in a Magazine layout – big panel icons and thumbnail images with useful information arranged around the screen in a really simple and attractive way.

This obviously makes full use of the fact that the 4.3” screen is all touch enabled, allowing infinite variation in the control layout – making each function of the player as straightforward to use as possible.

And on the specs front:

  • Video formats: AVI, MP4, DAT, MPG, WMV, RM/RMVB, 3GP,K3G, FLV
  • Great Resolution at 480×272 pixels
  • Simple movie transfer – just drag and drop
  • Audio formats: MP3, WMA, WAV, OGG, FLAC
  • FM Radio
  • Picture Viewer, including a slideshow function
  • FM Radio Recorder (in WMV)
  • Voice Recording (in WMV)
  • Text Viewer
  • Built-in Speaker
  • Memory Expansion

Overall then, a REALLY nice bit of kit - and coming in at £179.00, it’s (I think) a very reasonable price too!

If you want to purchase one of these bad boys, check out AMP3 here.

UK: Hannah Montana mobile content set for retail release at Sainsbury’s

By Ben Robinson on Sunday, June 7th, 2009 at 3:48 AM PST
In UK News, UK Retail

disney interactive studios logo UK: Hannah Montana mobile content set for retail release at Sainsbury’sAs I have already reported, Hannah Montana (the hit Disney Channel Original series) which has been viewed in more than 23 million homes across Europe is coming to mobile phones - to coincide with the recent launch of the blockbuster movie, Hannah Montana: The Movie (on May 1st 2009).

In addition to this, Sainsbury’s (one of the top supermarket chains in the UK) is distributing a series of gift cards throughout 600 stores in the UK for £5.99. Customers receiving the gift card will be able to go online to download feature games, screensavers and ringtones.

“Hannah Montana is a worldwide phenomena with a passionate fan base for whom mobile phones play a big part in their life. Bringing the mobile content to retail in a tangible product is a great way for the consumer to find the content they are looking for whether they are buying for themselves or as a gift for a fan.” said Sunil Gunderia, vice president, head of mobile for Disney Interactive Studios, Europe. “The Hannah Montana bundle pack is fantastic value offering fun games and the ability to personalize your phone all at one great price.”

Yvonne West, Manager of Gift Cards at Sainsbury’s added: “We are delighted to be the exclusive retailer of Hannah Montana mobile gift cards. We are confident that the combination of an on shelf product and the mass market appeal of Hannah Montana is an important step forward for mobile content distribution and retail will play a key part in this sector going forward”

This kind of multi-medium marketing, linking a number of verticals, is where we can expect to see Mobile advertising and online/offline retail going - in my view, a very good example of how things can work when all the thinking for a given proposition is ‘joined up’.
