LiMo Foundation announces widget support, carrier commitments, new version

LiMo FoundationAlthough Android is gaining momentum with a day, that doesn’t stop LiMo Foundation from advancing as well. Yesterday, they’ve released several news items. Let’s briefly go through each on of them:

  • First, LiMo announced endorsement of OMTP BONDI Specification in order to bring Web 2.0 apps to LiMo handsets. As a result, many of the future handsets will come with widget support. The good thing is that the single platform is now standard for all LiMo handsets, which should lead to wider mobile widgets adoption. More information on BONDI can be found here and the official LiMo release on the subject is here.
  • Then, we’ve learned that two large operators — Telefónica and SK Telecom — now have their place on LiMo’s Board of Directors. It’s an internal thing, but I guess it’s important to have such important players actively participating in the decision making process. Full release is here.
  • On the similar note (operator related), six major carriers wowed to deliver handsets using LiMo Platform implementations during this year. The operators in question are NTT DOCOMO, Orange, SK Telecom, Telefónica, Verizon Wireless and Vodafone. (release)
  • Final and the most important news as far as I can tell is that all technologies specified for the R2 release of the LiMo Platform have been contributed on time and that LiMo members are introducing reference implementations that will further ease the deployment of sophisticated and differentiated LiMo devices. The LiMo Reference Implementations will include code specified within both LiMo Platform R1 and LiMo Platform R2. This code includes source code contributions from members as well as components originating from open source communities. Speaking of contributors, they include ACCESS, Azingo, LG, Purple Labs and Samsung. (release)

As always more information about LiMo Foundation is available from their website.
