RIM Joins Wireless Power Consortium

BlackBerry-maker Research In Motion has just signed up with the Wireless Power Consortium, which is an organization trying to establish open standards for (you guessed it) wireless charging called Qi. Although the Palm Pre gets all the love for wireless charging through its inductive battery door, RIM has been including charging contacts on its devices for a long time to use with charging pods – it’s not quite the same, but the sentiment’s there. Samsung, Nokia, and Sanyo are already part of the organization, so odds are we’ll see something similar from them soon. Also fresh to the WPC roster is accessory manufacturer case-mate. Right now the WildCharge is attracting all of the attention on the accessory front, but with all of these handset manufacturers lining up, it’ll be hard to compete with an integrated, seamless wireless charging solution.
