It was back in April of 2009 when we first wrote about Belgium’s plans to issue the fourth 3G license. It looks like the day is approaching, at least according to De Standaard newspaper.
Apparently, the license will be sold either as a single 15MHz block — with a reserve price of 80 million EUR — or in 5MHz chunks with a reserve price of 40 million EUR each.
As a reminder, in 2001, the three incumbent operators — Belgacom’s Proximus, France Telecom-owned Mobistar, and Dutch KPN Telecom’s Base — paid 150 million EUR for each of their licenses.
After the 3G auction ends, a sale of spectrum in 2.6 GHz bands for LTE services will follow, with the reserve price of 15 million EUR for each of five blocks of 2 x 15MHz. A final block of 50 MHz of unpaid spectrum will be offered as well, with WiMAX operators in mind.
We’ll keep watching this space closely and keep you guys and gals in the loop. Stay tuned…
