I talked a little about the WiFi Alliance and Wireless Gigabit Alliance (WIGIG) teaming up for quicker WiFi but an interesting tidbit came out of the LA Times blog today, as an executive indicated Apple may be considering this tech for its future products.
WiGig Alliance Chairman and President Ali Sadri is optimistic about a speedy roll-out. In addition to Dell, Cisco Systems recently joined the organization’s board of directors. While Sardi pointed to Apple as an innovator in driving new technology uptake, he wouldn’t comment on the company’s involvement. Apple didn’t respond to a request for comment.
“We have practically all of the WiFi chip manufacturers on board,” he said.
This is cool because the partnership could alleviate the need for cables to transfer content from desktop to your iPhone. It should be able to transfer data within a room at 7 gigabits per second, which is fast enough to throw on multiple songs and videos to your iPhone, iPad or iWhatever. This would be the holy grail for many Apple owners, as I absolutely hate plugging my device it and waiting for iTunes to back up and sync all the content. I know this would still happen even with the new tech but it would somehow be more palatable without wires.
The odd thing is that this wireless syncing is already available on the iPhone through an unofficial application. Check out the video below for the concept and hope Apple will approve it.
