We knew it would be coming soon, but hearing that the Motorola Droid could be getting the Android 2.2 (Froyo) update in a matter of weeks is quite a surprise. The Motorola Droid is said to get Android 2.2 update possibly as soon as the 13th of this month. But don’t get too excited just yet.
The Android 2.1 update for the device was delayed quite a few times before the real deal start hitting handsets. This may be the case with Froyo as well, but we’ve seen builds floating around that seem to run quite well on the device, so it’s likely that Verizon has learned a thing or two from the Android 2.1 launch. We’ve heard that the update may hit in July, so this is certainly falling in line with predictions of what we’d previously heard. It also doesn’t hurt that select Droid owners started to see a beta build of Froyo earlier this week. This seems like a good amount of time to get any issues ironed out for the finalized version.
If the July 13th date does turn out to be true, it would be hitting two days before the Droid X becomes available. It’s not known if the new Motorola Droid X will already have Android 2.2 Froyo preinstalled. That’s likely not the case, but anything could happen. As with the Android 2.1 update, Verizon sends out their OTAs in batches, so even if Froyo is released, it could take a little time to get to your handset.
We know that the X will also receive a Froyo update, but it’s just something to take into account. But, if the Gingerbread rumors are true, one may want to go with the X , since it will be upgradable to Android 3.0.
Let’s hope this rumor holds true, as Droid owners have a lot to look forward to.
