If you thought Samsung was going to rest easy in the Android OS space with its Galaxy S line, think again, as we’re now getting wind of some specs for an upcoming Android slider known as the Samsung Galaxy Q. It’s interesting that this rumored Android phone boasts some features that best the Galaxy S, while other features seem to lag a bit behind.
The Samsung Galaxy Q takes many cues from the Galaxy S line. The Q will supposedly make use of the same 1GHz Hummingbird processor and Super AMOLED display technology that we see in the S. Strangely, the Q uses a 3-inch Super AMOLED display, in contrast to the Galaxy S 4-inch Super AMOLED display. For us, the T-Mobile Samsung Vibrant’s (T-Mobile’s Galaxy S variant) 4-inch display is the perfect size for smartphones, but Samsung seems to think otherwise.
The Q is rumored to be sporting an 8-megapixel camera (with an LED flash) on the rear that can record HD video, as well a 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera. Rounding out the device’s feature set, you’ll find 16GB of internal storage space, WiFi b/g/n, MicroSD card slot, Bluetooth 3.0, and a mini HDMI port. Oh yeah, it’ll also be shipping with Android 2.2 (Froyo). And, of course, the Q will have a QWERTY keyboard – similarly to the keyboard-toting Samsung Galaxy S Pro. The Q could end up being something like a smaller Galaxy S Pro with a better camera.
We still don’t know what the device will look like, but we wouldn’t be surprised if Samsung kept with the design aesthetic of the Sprint Epic 4G (Sprint’s variant of the Galaxy S Pro). Samsung makes a good phone, but their designs are usually not anything to write home about. Case in point, we’ve had about five people ask if the T-Mobile Vibrant was an iPhone. That’s not saying much about Samsung’s industrial design. But, in the end, we’re just happy there’s going to be another Android slider coming to market with an impressive spec sheet. Smartphones like the LG Ally and the MyTouch Slide just can’t compete with the high end devices coming out today.
We are also in the dark of pricing and availability at the moment, and it seems as if the price could go either way. Taking off an inch of their Super AMOLED display may help Samsung give the Q a more competitive price compared to the S Pro, but that’s just speculation.
We’ll be sure to keep you up to date on this device as more details become available.
