GENIVI Alliance has chosen MeeGo as the basis of their next reference release for In-Vehicle Infotainment (IVI) platform.
We don’t know all the details, like when the first reference design will be unveiled. All we have are GENIVI president’s (Graham Smethurst) words: “We selected MeeGo as the open source basis for our platform because it is technically innovative and can provide the cross architecture build support we require for our references. Working with MeeGo we expect to establish a solution that effectively merges IVI needs with those of the other MeeGo target device categories.”
Among GENIVI members we find major car makers like GM, BMW and PSA PeugeotCitroen; as well as semiconductor companies such as Intel, Texas Instruments, Marvell, NXP and Freescale. Garmin is also on board, hinting us what kind of navigation service we should expect in GENIVI’s products.
As you know, MeeGo is formed by merging Intel’s Moblin and Nokia’s Maemo Linux-based platforms to create a single platform to be used on various devices, smartphones and netbooks included.
