India’s Bharti Airtel will join Tata DoCoMo and launch its 3G network by year-end, too. According to the company’s announcement, the new HSPA-based network will be “the best in world in terms of technology and will enable high peak user throughputs.” Folks in 13 telecom circles around the country will be able to connect, including major metro areas such as Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai and Hyderabad; which account for 68% of Bharti’s market share. Moreover, the operator will also sign roaming contracts with other operators to allow its subscribers to use 3G services wherever they travel.
Not all details are known at the moment. We know Bharti plans to introduce “a suite of products in areas such as mobile commerce and mobile health.” Furthermore, we also know who will build the network – Ericsson, Nokia Siemens Networks and Huawei will all get their share of the action.
Finally, it’s also worth pointing out Vodafone Essar will join the 3G game too, and is preparing for the next year launch…
