It is a fact that with the rising smartphone adoption, more and more people use mobile Internet services while on the go. As a matter of fact, Juniper Research predicts that the amount of mobile data traffic generated by smartphones, feature phones and tablets will exceed 14,000 petabytes by 2015. To put this figure in perspective, that’s equivalent to 18 billion movie downloads or 3 trillion music tracks!
You may be thinking that mobile operators are doomed as they technically can’t support such a traffic. Rest assured that it won’t be the case, with 63% of traffic, nearly 9,000 Petabytes, moving across to Wi-Fi and Femtocell networks.
At the moment, WiFi accounts for over 90% of the traffic offloaded, but Femtocells are set for impressive growth as well, offering tremendous opportunities for the carriers.
Unsurprisingly, the research company forecasts that North America and Western Europe will account for over 60% of global mobile data offloaded. However, developing markets will join the trend too, with the Indian sub-continent leading the way.
