LG said it will start cranking out its own custom ARM processors for its smartphones and this could mean that some cooler phones from LG in the near future.
According to Mobile Burn, LG will be using the ARM Cortex-A15 and Cortex-A9 processors to craft these custom chips. What’s the advantage? Well, you can tailor the chip to do exactly what you want.
Apple uses its own custom A5 chips for the iPad 2 (made by Samsung) and this is tailored the software and the devices that it wants.
Of course, this leads me to wonder what will happen to NVIDIA, which is powering the best LG handsets we’ve seen in a while like the T-Mobile G2x. NVIDIA also counts Motorola as a major customer but losing LG could be a pain.
We’ll definitely keep an eye on this one going forward.
