Thinking of getting a Sprint powered tablet or mobile hotspot? If unlimited data was a huge incentive for you, you might want to think twice. According to a new rumor, the nation’s third largest carrier is planning on launching a tiered data package for its embedded devices. Dan Hesse has always touted the carrier’s unlimited data plans, which have been a boon for Sprint when compared with the other major carriers in the U.S., but soon it seems they’ll only apply to smartphones.
But all is not lost. BriefMobile reports:
Sprint are in the giving mood as well. Starting the same day, along with the launch of Nexus S 4G, Sprint is giving everyone on the “Everything Data 450? plan a bonus of 300 anytime minutes. This will essentially make it the “Everything Data 750.” In all reality, the plan can’t be beat. Paired with true unlimited data, unlimited data, and “Any Mobile, Any Time,” at $69.99 only the pre-paid services can match the benefits of this, (not really).
Now, I’m not sure if this is a one-time thing or if it will be monthly, but I’m sure it’s the former. Personally, the 450 plan has worked out just fine for me because calling to other mobile devices, regardless of carrier, has been unlimited. Tacking on an additional 300 minutes for landline calling might not be all that enticing to many users.
At any rate, just be prepared for the coming changes. They are as follows:
- 3GB data for $34.99 (available on Galaxy Tab, Sierra Pro Overdrive, Novatel MiFi)
- 5GB data for $49.99 (available on connection cards, USB modems, Galaxy Tab, and mobile hotspots)
- 10GB data for $79.99 (available on all embedded devices)
We can assume that all the plans will be good for the Motorola Xoom and the upcoming WiMax-enabled BlackBerry PlayBook. For now, we’ll hold our breath in hopes that these tiered options don’t make their way over to the smartphone arena, or Sprint may lose one of its truly competitive features against the other carriers.
