According to an image obtained by AndroidCentral, Verizon Wireless is due to launch the eagerly awaited successor to the Droid and Droid 2, aptly called the Droid 3, in a little over 2 weeks, on the 14th of July. Already launched in China as the Milestone 3, we have the spec sheet: dualcore Texas Instruments OMAP 4430 processor, 4 inch screen with a resolution of 540 x 960 pixels, 8 megapixel camera that can also capture 1080p video, 16 GB of internal storage, and best of all it runs the latest version of Android (v. 2.3). We’ll have to wait until we get one in our hands to see if the bootloader is unlocked, because there’s nothing worse than getting an awesome piece of hardware to play with, and then struggling with the additional layers of software Motorola tacks on top of Android in order to differentiate themselves; in other words we hate MotoBLUR.
Next up on the list of release dates is the Droid Bionic, which was announced back in January at the Consumer Electronics Show. It’s due to come out on the 4th of August, making it a solid 7 months from announcement to availability; for shame. We’d like to say with confidence what specifications it’ll have, but word on the street is the reason the Bionic has been delayed for so long is that Motorola rebooted the project and decided to not only give the Bionic a new design, but new guts as well. We wouldn’t be surprised to hear that it sports the same hardware as the Droid 3, but without a QWERTY keyboard, and with the addition of 4G LTE support.
Which device are you most excited about? The QWERTY packing Droid 3 or the slate Droid Bionic that will deliver mobile broadband speeds that can rival the internet connection you have at home? For us it’s an easy choice: speed, can never have enough.
